And On It Goes

In my last blog, I was starting my search for a reliable plumber in the area to fix a minor issue with my kitchen sink. Del Campo Plumbing received resounding endorsements from several of my coworkers so I felt confident giving them a call. This seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to find a plumbing company for any future needs that may come up, which I have no doubt they will. The house I bought here in Wilmington, Delaware is far from new and I can tell things have not been updated in a long time. While I haven’t had any major issues come up since moving in, I expect that they will surface eventually. It will make me feel a lot better to know that I have an honest and skilled plumbing contractor I can call when they do arise.

In this post, I’d like to talk about my experience with Del Campo Plumbing and discuss why it is so important to find a quality plumber before there is a major problem. Unexpected emergencies are an unfortunate reality of home ownership, and it is best to be prepared to respond to a wide variety of situations at any time to avoid finding yourself scammed or ripped off by unscrupulous contractors who are lurking everywhere looking for uninformed and unsuspecting customers to prey upon.

As I have mentioned, I am far from the savviest person when it comes to home repairs of any type. Plumbing, heating, electrical, and other mechanical systems are far from my area of expertise, and I have not had to personally deal with many of these issues myself over the years. I am what you could call a late bloomer – I did not move out on my own until several years after college. I saw no reason to throw my money away on rent. I always enjoyed ample freedom and personal space living at home with my parents, and they were always happy to have me. We worked as a unit and helped each other out, making the arrangement more than ideal for all involved. Even once I moved out, I chose to rent which meant a landlord handled any problems that came up. My time as a true homeowner has been very short thus far.

That by no means precludes me from recognizing the many responsibilities of home ownership, however. Leaving issues to fester can often hurt the value of your property and take away from the comfort and enjoyment of your home. Many people dread calling in a professional due to costs or previous bad experiences, but once you find a contractor who you know will do a good job for a fair price, it will really help to remove any hesitation you may have about getting timely assistance with repairs around the home. Del Campo Plumbing was fantastic, and I would not think twice about calling them again in the future for help with any plumbing problem, no matter how serious.

Chapter 2

Even though I am finding myself coming around to life here in New Castle County, I am always going to represent Calgary anywhere and everywhere I go. That is where I was born and raised. It is as much as part of me as my DNA. The characteristics I carry are all very much a product of where I grew up. I am more sure of that now than ever before. With my new job, I find myself meeting other transplants like myself who hail from all across the continent. There is even a fellow Canadian working in a different department at my company who I met at a recent work function. This is a change from the makeup of my former company, which comprised of mostly lifelong Calgary residents. Working alongside such a diverse group of people, I am beginning to notice the nuances between people from various regions in the US and Canada. It comes down to more than just their accents or appearances. It is something that has bearings on their values, beliefs, interests, and personality. Of course, this isn’t applicable in every case and should not be used as a measure of a person, but it is something interesting to note. I am proud of my Canadian heritage, and I am equally happy to be able to live and work in the US. I want to make both these aspects abundantly clear.

Today has led me to believe that I can manage this with minimal effort. After giving my forearms a healthy amount of exercise over the last few months trying to make sure my kitchen tap was completely shut off after each use, I decided this was a plumbing issue and not just a fact of life I should have to deal with every day. Still being relatively new to the area, I had no idea which plumbing service I should call. I will be the first to admit that I am easy prey. I don’t know much about plumbing and I’m quick to trust anyone who can throw out a few big, technical words. It’s a flaw I am working on. Nevertheless, this is why it is important for me to find a reputable plumbing company that will not try to take me for a ride – because like a lamb to the slaughter, I will go in blissful ignorance.

I always try to solicit friends and family for their recommendations first. Being that I have only recently moved here and have no family in the area, my list of contacts was rather short. Instead, I turned to my coworkers. I’ve gotten to know them well enough over the past couple of months and I felt confident that I hadn’t given anyone reason to throw me under a bus. I knew I would get at least a few solid referrals.

My coworkers did not let me down. I find people love to help, especially when it comes to giving tips and advice. They were all too eager to share their list of trusted Delaware plumbers in the New Castle County area with me. There was one name that was on every list so that was who I called.

The Beginning

One would assume that there would be a negligible difference between life in Canada and the US. Sure, there are the key issues such as health care and availability of poutine, but other than that I had always imagined that it would be a rather seamless transition. After all, Canadian and American culture are perhaps the most similar between any two countries in the world – we are neighbors with interlinked histories. This thinking helped calm my nerves when it came time to move south of the border for a new job. I’ve never been a big fan of change but it is not something that one can avoid forever, and this was a career opportunity of a lifetime that was well worth stepping outside of my comfort zone for. I told myself that things would more or less be the same, just in a new setting.

During the many back and forth trips to prepare for my upcoming move, it really did seem to be that way. I didn’t feel like a foreigner in a strange land – at least, not anymore than you would expect from someone in a new city. Things were undeniably different, but they felt familiar enough that there was no need for panic. It was a situation I felt I could adapt to easily enough given some time. Between work and other daily routines, I would assimilate before I even knew it.

Fast forward a few months later, and I might as well be living on a different planet. There are many things you miss when you only explore the surface of a city. I was merely a tourist viewing the tip of the iceberg on my short trips to the area. It wasn’t until I finally moved here that I got to see below the surface. As you delve deeper in, that’s when you begin to find the true heart of a city’s unique culture and character. The more I got to know about Wilmington, Delaware, the more I could appreciate my new life here. Do I feel comfortable enough to call it home yet? Not quite, but slowly getting there.

At a glance, most cities in Canada and the US appear to be almost indistinguishable. Then again, this is the observation of someone who has spent a majority of their life living in and around Calgary, Alberta. I haven’t had the chance to experience life in many different places, but I’ve done my fair share of traveling. This move has made me question what else I may have missed about other cities I have visited in the past. I used to believe that a city was just a city, and any minor differences would come down to its landmarks and local economy. Now I see, it is the diversity of people that brings life and personality to a city, and that is only something that will reveal itself upon close scrutiny.
